I’m a first gen mija striving to live mindfully as I figure out adulthood. Embracing señora season is about more than growing *old*—it’s about growing UP…and that is soo much more than making career moves, a great side dish, or the best morning routine (but don’t worry, we’ll cover those topics, too. Life isn’t good at either extreme!).
Whoever said that quinceañeras marked womanhood forgot to mention things like taking ownership of your actions while having self-compassion, differentiating when you need discipline versus rest, effective communication, boundary setting, tapping into your intuition, y mucho mucho más!
My goal is to be open with what I’m facing in the hopes you don’t feel alone if you encounter it too, mija. So come for the chisme, stay for the lessons! Let’s be mindful juntas, Samantha 🤎
For my day job, I work as a hospice nurse. I’m also a board-certified coach & have taken a certification course on somatic modalities. I’m personally vested in helping people curate a life that *they* are proud of, that feels gooood, where they can savor the ups & confidently navigate the downs–no matter how long they have left.
The name “Mindful Mija” had been marinating for two years before I finally stopped resisting it. If you’re not familiar, “mija” is a Spanish contraction of “mi” (my) and “hija” (daughter). It is a word of belonging, of acceptance, of safety. When someone calls you mija, you know you’re officially part of the fam! & now, you’re a part of this fam.
It also denotes the fact that we are entering an era of redefining what it means to be daughters. Maybe before it meant blindly following guidelines in the hopes of fitting in, or grief from not having the family you dreamed of, or even guilt if we didn’t always sacrifice for others. Through using mindfulness tools to explore these roles & how they’ve impacted you, we get to reinvent what your life could look like.
When I’m not working my 9-5 or writing for The Mindful Mija, you can probably find me…
– Spending time my mega amazing boyfriend whom I’ve known since I was 12, Brendan (or as we affectionately refer to him here, just “B”).
– Taking a local pottery or yoga class, or choosing a beach to go for a stroll. I just moved to San Francisco this year & it’s been so fun to explore!
– Reading about a new topic on my Kindle. From longevity to communication to gathering well, I love learning!
– Catching up with an amiguis or someone from my massive Mexican-Panamanian familia, probably to figure out how to make a family receta vegetarian.
